Market research firm Gartner is urging IT Directors and Heads of IT to invest in collaboration and other Web 2.0 initiatives in order to stay competitive.

The analyst firm says companies need to switch focus from cost cutting and automation and re-set their sights on investment to boost productivity, innovation and creativity in people.

“The source of competitive advantage is people. If you can raise the impact of your people you can achieve competitive advantage,” says Regina Casonato, managing vice-president at Gartner.

Within 10 years, workers will spend 80% of their time working collaboratively in what Gartner refers to as a “high-performance workplace” where ideas and change happen fast. This people-powered organisation requires companies to rethink how they look at productivity and put less emphasis on output per hour.

Collaboration will extend beyond company walls and by 2009 60% of new collaboration projects will be with suppliers and customers, compared to 10% in 2004.

“Taking a collaborative approach can lead to greater customer intimacy beyond the traditional sense of personalised customer service or targeted service delivery,” says Gartner research director Nikos Drakos.

Already firms have invested £3.2bn in portal, collaboration and content management licences in 2005 and this will rise to £4.8bn by 2009.

According to the 2006 Gartner EXP survey of 1,400 CIOs, collaboration came from nowhere to clinch the number four spot in their top 10 technology priorities
